This is based on a real event. Based on the hype around Black Panther, it was obvious that cinemas were going to be packed, so my homie chose a theater in ________ Hills, which - you guessed it! - is obviously a wealthy neighborhood where many Caucasian Americans reside for historical reasons of disenfranchisement. As an Arab American, I have very often experienced discomfort with Hollywood's portrayal of all kinds of people of color; the one who gets killed first; the one who is caracaturized as a lame sidekick with no dimensions of personality; to who is hijacking the plane; it always feels demeaning. Without spoiling the movie, I will say that FINALLY in a major blockbuster comic book flick I got to experience several juicy Fanonian times when I and other people of color were able to laugh out loud while white people - for once - were the ones feeling silent and uncomfortable. Revenge is a dish best served with a side of mild, subtle feelings of humorous satisfaction.
